Recycle, reschmycle

Lady in Secto this morning with two whole trolleyfuls, all wrapped carelessly in (I estimate) a total of 20 plastic bags emblazoned with 'Green points if you re-use'. Chances of this lady re-using said bags, as suggested, suitably incentivized? Next to nil, I would say. Chances of them ending up snagged in some roadside hedgerow? Higher.

What will it take for people to desist from using these ugly, nasty little bags?

And if Secto is supposed to be one of the country's leading retailers, how come they are not displaying any leadership by continuing to dispense these wretched bags willy-nilly when they should be (a) charging at least 50p per bag for the time being and (b) aggressively phasing them out within a short timeframe? The Irish have managed it. One village down west has managed it. Is it all simply beyond us English?

I think solving the bag issue needs to come from the top. No supermarket wants to be the first.

Pricing people out is one way but unfair on the poorest and it would feed the anti-tax culture. I think the way to go is to ban them for good, like many other countries have.

Thanks Charlie.

Where is 'the top' though?

As for wanting to be the first, individual supermarkets were delighted to be 'the first' to offer home deliveries, 'the first' to devote serious shelf space to local products, 'the first' to offer financial services etc. Why such reticence to be 'the first' to take a decisive step on plastic bags?

I agree that pricing out the poorest may be unjust, and also that the way to go is simply to ban the flimsy bags. :-)

The top is Government, be that local, regional, UK, European or Worldwide.

The examples you give of being 'firsts' are seen as useful to the consumer however.

Charging customers for bags, or just not giving them out, isn't in the same league

I've been worrying about never having heard of Secto, so I googled it. Apparently it's posh Finnish design-led* lighting stuff. Gosh, who'd a thunk it?

*as opposed to 'accidentally come-about while dooing something else entirely'
